NICHO PHUTI: He
always loved sketching while at school, and, on matriculation, he went to
Panda, the art movement in Pretoria, where he began his studies in art His
talent was encouraged by Lucky Sibaya, the internationally renowned artist,
who invited Nico to work along side him in his studio in order to learn more
about different art techniques, including paint mixing and wood panel carving He
has participated in various group exhibitions around SA. His work has been bought by the University
of Botswana and Fort Hare.
Corporations both in SA and overseas have purchased a number of his
works for display and investment. Panel Carving, Painting & Themes
There is a tradition in Africa of carving doors
and panels. Nicho has modernised the tradition with his technique which is a
mix of etching, carving and painting. His early work was done on natural
wood, but now he prefers to use Superwood (MDF) for consistency and ability
to take detail. He first of all prepares the board and paints it uniformally
one colour. He then sketches the theme for the piece, working entirely from
memory. The carving then takes place. This is the most difficult part, every
cut has to be final - there is no margin for error or rework. Once the
carving is complete he uses acrylics to obtain the finished effect. Although Nicho was brought up in an urban
environment his themes are nearly always from rural Africa and his Zulu
tradition. |
