Speelman Mahlangu: Speelman was born 1958, in Katlehong,
Transvaal. He is a sculptor of figures, he works in clay, bronze and wood. A painter of
figures and genre, working in oil, acrylic, ink, pencil, charcoal and mixed
media. He studied 1977-80 Katlehong
Art Centre under Rose Shakanovsky & Stanley Nkosi. He was a part time and then a full time
teacher at the Katlehong Art Centre from 1981 to
1987. He then was a graphic and sculpture teacher at the Ezebeleni
Cripple Care Centre. Tokoza East Rand.
He also designs tapestries, which are woven at the Art Centre. He also makes
pots and relief murals in clay. He has exhibited in SA, West Germany, Israel
and Canada
(1977); The Tributaries Tour SA & West Germany 1985; Also the Everard Read and Natalie Knight Galleries throughout the
90’s. He was awarded the 1980 First Prize – for New Signatures – SAAA
Pretoria. He has represented at Frankfurt
Ethnology Museum West Germany;
Uni. Of Zululand; SA National Gallery Cape
Town; Banks overseas
as well as in SA. He is
much sought after, quite mercurial with his ideas and work patterns and very collectable.
